About

Where did Anything Sews come from?

Like many small businesses, Anything Sews started as a pipe dream. After learning how to sew over a decade ago, Kate (lead designer and seamstress) became enthralled with refining her skills and developing new ones. Each new sewing project meant a challenge, and each challenge pushed Kate to new levels. It didn’t take long for her passion for sewing— in particular, costume design and creation— to develop into a bachelor’s degree in theater with a focus on tech. After graduating, she continued to work on custom sewing projects and theater costumes. After a few years of following her passion on the side, Kate realized she could take the steps to pursue it full-time. With that decision made, Anything Sews was born!

Sustainability and Fast Fashion

Capitalism and fast fashion brands have lead to less care in the creation of clothing and ignorance of where our clothing comes from. To cut costs and maximize profit, many brands outsource labor and utilize cheap, mass produced fabric. This clothing falls apart quickly, costs very little, and encourages consumers to think less about where their clothes come from.As a small, independently owned atelier, Anything Sews has made it our goal to help minimize the effect of fast fashion as much as we can. Hand crafting clothing allows us to spend more time with each piece, ensuring durability and quality. Many of our garments are made from fabric purchased from a local end of mill fabric shop, ensuring that less fabric is discarded in landfills. When you purchase a ready-to-wear garment from Anything Sews, you can guarantee that it was made with love and care.

Upcycling, Tailoring, and Alterations

Another way to help counter the negative effects caused by fast fashion involves clothing that already exists. Think about all the clothes donated to your local Goodwill or other thrift store; many of those pieces are outdated and worn down. In order to prevent these articles of clothing from being thrown away and put money back in our local economy, the Anything Sews atelier also focuses on the art of upcycling. This involves purchasing those worn out clothes and giving them new life— sometimes replacing parts of it, and sometimes modernizing the look with new trims and details. These upcycled clothes are included in our shop at a lower cost than our ready-to-wear items, to encourage others to give them new life!Maybe you have an article of clothing you love, or want to love, but can’t; maybe it’s too big, outdated, or worn out. That’s where the next part of this comes in— tailoring and alterations!Did you know that before the Industrial Revolution, most clothing was made to fit a specific person? Did you know that when new fashions arose, many people had their outfits modified and brought into the new era? Extant garments from the 17- and 1800s often show signs of these modifications, and here’s the thing: nothing says you can’t do this now! Anything Sews is more than happy to offer tailoring and alterations services, whether it’s hemming a new dress or bringing a shirt from the 1970s into the 2020s. We want to help you love your closet again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a physical shop front?

At this time, no. While we attend various local events in a pop-up format, Anything Sews does not have a physical shopfront and will most likely not develop one in the near future.

How do you price Custom Orders?

All Custom Orders follow this formula: materials (x2) + (≤20 hours x hourly rate) + (>20 hours x discounted rate) = cost. The first 20 hours are charged at a full rate depending on complexity of the order and what all is included; the rate for a fairly simple mommy-and-me set will be cheaper than the rate for an evening gown, for example. After approximately 20 hours of work has been reached, a discounted rate will be applied. However, please note that Custom Orders vary and certain orders may incur other costs. The only way to truly know how much a Custom Order will run is to schedule a Consultation!

Do you accept Payment Plans?

As of right now, the only accepted payment plans are for Custom Orders over $250. While all orders require a 25% down payment to be used as a nonrefundable deposit, the payment plan terms will depend on the project itself. Payment plans will be offered and discussed during Consultations. No Custom Orders will be shipped out until paid in full.

Custom Made

Due to the nature of bespoke clothing, we will not accept returns on completed custom orders. If the order is not to your satisfaction, please reach out to us and we will be happy to come up with a solution. Minor tailoring and alteration is provided, free of charge, up to three times, and afterwards will be charged based on complexity. Full terms are included in all Custom Order contracts.Cancellations: All cancellations for Custom Orders are taken on a case-by-case basis. If the project is less than 50% complete, any payments made to the project except for the deposit will be returned. If the project is over 50% complete, only 50% of the payments made after the deposit will be returned. All clients will be notified when their project reaches the 50% completion mark. It is up to the atelier’s discretion if a cancelled project will be completed and sold elsewhere. The only time a deposit will be refunded on a Custom Order is if the cancellation request is made within 24 hours of the payment; deposits will be held until that 24 hour mark, and will then be used to purchase materials and do more in depth research.
